WHAT’S A MCGUFFIN?

A McGuffin is a made up word, coined by Alfred Hitchcock to describe the essential plot device that compels the characters in a screenplay into action.  It doesn’t matter what exactly it is, a suitcase or a bit of microfilm, the McGuffin is the device that moves the whole thing into motion…in other words without the McGuffin there is no story.
